With the exception of Diamonds Are Forever, there really hasn’t been a Bond that wasn’t at least a lot of fun:

THUNDERBALL: Probably Connery’s best performance as Bond. This one is “more Bond than Bond” and it works very hard to please and mostly succeeds. The final underwater battle could be trimmed a bit.

OHMSS: Okay, this is the greatest Bond movie ever. It is the only one that could really be called “yarn.” Determined, the other movies are gigantic, but this one feels memoir. Lazenby is the most physical Bond and in many ways the most likeable. The scene where he loses his wife at the destroy is one of the best Bond moments ever.

LIVE AND LET DIE: This movie suffers from Diamonds-are-forever syndrome. LALD is mountainous and exotic but it feels static (like DIAMONDS before it) . However, Roger Moore’s introduction as Bond is comic and sets the tone for his interpretation thereafter. Yaphet Kotto and his henchmen all perform terrific villains, too (especially Tee Hee) .

VIEW TO A KILL: This is more “classic Bond” than some are willing to admit. It is a lean, no-gadgets movie that is, in the best tradition of Moore, witty, fascinating and stylish. It is also the only Bond to film in America (San Francisco) and actually gain reliable exercise of its American locations. A comely swan song for Roger Moore’s 007.

OCTOPUSSY: Very chilly war. This movie also dishes up the most bizarre imagery since YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. The beginning gives us a clown being chased by twin knife throwers deep inside the Eastern Bloc. This movie owes more to Indiana Jones than other Bonds and it is a lot of fun for it. Definitely a top notch Bond.

DIE ANOTHER DAY: Brosnan is stout as Bond (though he doesn’t actually acquire a likeable Bond) . This movie is very enormous and there is a lot to like. But owing to its hugeness (and the fact that the Brosnan Bonds no longer have the mammoth creative stable of writers Michael Wilson and Richard Maibaum and director John Glen) it is an uneven movie. The Bonds support getting bigger but that may not ultimately work in their favor. Level-headed, this movie tries hard and the results are mostly scrumptious.

So … this isn’t a rummage sale of okay Bonds. There’s trustworthy stuff here. Lots of fun to be had and a collection that is worth the tag of admission.

I bought this box station as a birthday exhibit for a friend who is hard of hearing, thinking that he could employ the closed caption option.

I was disturbed to acquire that all the DVD’s in all of the James Bond boxed sets are NOT closed captioned in English!

Auto-biographies I have ever seen done on anyone.

I remember how noteworthy I enjoyed watching this biography several years ago when it aired on A&E. At that time I really did’nt know considerable about Shirley Temple aside from her being married and acting as an Ambassador, so this biography was quite a treat! Peter Graves did an marvelous job narrating (as always) and it included clips from practically all her films and the details of her life at that time. Naturally after watching Shirley Temple’s biography I wished Twentieth Century Fox would open releasing her films. There was a 3 movie collection advertised on tv that seemed too expensive for 3 measley films. Then years later Fox finally started to release most of Shirley’s films on video for about 5.99 each at Target. Needless to say they sold like hotcakes and I did’nt destroy time collecting them all! Although I’ve noticed that alot of these films are being converted to dvd I have no way of buying them all over again, considering most of her films were only about an hour long. However, I will be purchasing this biography on dvd to add to my collection and relish the lifestory of the greatest child star of all-time!!!!!

Starting with the reason why this is a critical prefer for any Renee Fleming fan (or even any fan of a vast singer / actor) –it may be the best thing she has ever done. She uses every dynamic, every color, every movement, every reaction to her fellow singers you can imagine to originate a one-of-a-kind “living” woman, and a few ideas you probably won’t interrogate. (The last little of Act One is infinitely touching without a tag sung…unprejudiced to name one.) If you are a fan of hers, you will procure nothing to complain about and so mighty to admire–the tricky mixture of sadness, irritation, hurt, fancy, and even a touch of humor that makes up the final meeting of Octavian in Act One. She does not “milk” the monologue about the clocks, which makes it all the more touching. Her final appearance in the opera, including the heartbreak of the Trio, is a marvel to contemplate and hear. In its subtlety and range and originality, her Marschallin is unmatched. Really, this is a truly broad operatic portrayal, to ghastly and even surpass the extraordinary Schwarzhopf in the well-known filmed version. (She certainly seems more “girlish”–Octavian would not topple in savor with a “dilapidated” woman. He sees no disagreement between them, age or otherwise. Significant and usually ignored, especially by a few too many people who sing they know Rosenkavalier backward and forward. Why do so many of them deem the Marschallin is a middle-aged woman? ) The funny roles (certainly “buffo” and played broadly) mostly work very well and though Hawlata is far from the greatest “singer” of Ochs, he is lovably inferior and even rather pathetic when confronted with his contain foolishness. He seems within the character word for word and it shows. His vocal shortcomings are not so grave as to hold you from enjoying him. And Jonas Kaufmann is quite amusing as a tenor who brings in paparazzi as well as an agent! The conducting by Thielemann is free from the “squareness” that sometimes mars his conducting. He is flexible and free and follows the singers like a glove. When a firmer hand is needed, it is there. In fact, his control over line, shape, and dynamics to match Fleming is one of the best selling points of the recording. The production is fair to witness at, the updating unobtrusive (how often is that the case? ) and the directing makes all the elements work as a frame for characters not fair singers, especially the expend of mirrors as a meaningful and unifying contrivance. A few comical pieces of business don’t quite work but they are few and short and far between. Costumes, lighting, etc. are all of a portion. This should be a given at all times in every production, but so rarely is. No, it is not Zeffirelli realism, but all the better for it as far as I am concerned. (You know if you are not in agreement, so win that into consideration.) And the “predicament” of the young dismal servant which is a limited too redolent of its time period–and not ours–is cleverly “solved.”

Now the disappointments. And they are grave (to me…some people might not be as bothered, but I have to say what I feel.) Neither Sophie Koch or Diana Damrau, though musical, and colorful and characterful, snarl beautifully in the highest registers–and their roles lie high mighty of the time. Heavenly passages will be marred over and over by strain and shrillness. Koch is more forgivable in Act One because she is supposed to be highly strung, but even then strain distracts. Sadly, the next two acts accumulate worse and worse. Damrau is objective as poor. She has some undeniably magnificent moments but she has more strained ones, culminating with her entrance in the Trio that has to be the ugliest version I have ever heard. This is not world-class singing, no matter how many people claim it is. I wish it were different. She is musical and she can act. But the singing is too often dreadful. She is straining, forcing the tone, no two ways about it. And Koch’s share in the Trio is not grand better. So the opera’s highlight is only a highlight in Fleming’s singing and acting. A major sign against it. Luckily, the orchestra supports the rise at the waste of the Trio before the key change with such a pudgy place of strings, the harshness of the two “outer” voices have their shrillness tempered some, so at least the payoff is aloof effective. Disappointing, though. VERY disappointing.

Hard to give a star rating but four stars for what is (truly) broad that will hopefully benefit you overcome the vocal shortcomings.

NOTE: I watched it two more times. I liked Koch better than I did. The last two acts lie lower, so her singing (sans Trio) is less harsh than Act One. Smooth feel the same about Damrau, alas, though the final duets are handsome.

It is enchanting to impress that the last three Rosenkavaliers to have been released have all been updated to relatively contemporary setting with one major exception–the Robert Carsen 2004 Salzburg production. But terror not those conservatives who bawl “no updating, please” because truly there is in my estimation nary a understanding in observe. Carsen on the other hand has decided to screen the last fifty years of the twentieth century to substantial execute.

Indeed Schwananwilms’ performance remains one of two reasons to collect the Medici Arts set; the other is the Octavian of Anke Vondung, passionate, intense and blessed with a elegant disclose. Alas the sonics and the performance of Kurt Rydl seriously scupper this DVD. The Sophie is a Japanese soprano with a radiant and hard tone that is rarely appropriate. But the remark is undeniably stunning and she does offer a committed performance. I can’t imagine that I will obtain another Rosenkavalier unless the Schwarzkopf is reissued as it surely must be–and soon, I hope. My only resistance to it has been the fact that it was filmed and then lip-synched, but then Schwarzkopf was the Marschallin for so many years courtesy of the San Francisco Opera Company, I will gladly bury my resistance to filmed opera in this instance.

Ultimately, Bergman seems to be creating a site in which we are forced to retort that a mammoth deal of what we fill we know about each other rests largely upon what we ourselves project upon them. Elisabeth’s face and its expressions become akin to a blank cover on which we ogle our beget hopes, dreams, torments, and tragedies projected–while the person unhurried the face constantly eludes our concept. In this respect, the theme is remarkably well-suited to its medium: the blankness of the cinema conceal with its flickering, endless shifting images that can be interpreted in infinite ways.

Bergman is exceptionally fortunate in his actresses here: both Liv Ullman as the calm Elisabeth and Bibi Anderson as the increasingly distraught Alma offer improbable performances that seem to encompass both what we know from the distinct surface and what we can never know that exists leisurely their individual masks. Ullman has been justly praised for the power of her silence in this film, and it is difficult to imagine another actress who could carry off a role that must be performed entirely by ambigious implications. And Bergman and his eminent cinematographer Sven Nykvist absorb the mask with a dreamlike quality that is constantly interrupted by unexpected images ranging from glimpses of soundless films to a moment at which the celluloid appears to burn to images that merge Ullman and Anderson’s faces into one.

As in many of his films, Bergman seems to be stating that we cannot know another person, and that our inability to know is our greatest tragedy. But however the film is interpreted, it is a shapely and remarkable achievement, one that will resonate with the viewer long after the film ends. On a technical mark, I recommend the MGM video release (and am astonished that the film is not available on DVD as yet) ; although the subtitles have moments of what is clearly bad translation, they are easy to read. I cannot recommend this film too strongly.

This is one of Bergman’s most piquant psychological studies ever. It asks (or rather inspires the viewer to ask) radical questions about personality, identity and character by presenting a woman who one day objective stops living her life; stops talking, working or responding to others. This rejection of both self and society poses a threat to others who don’t know how to clarify what is going on and can’t ask her directly. Is your identity (“persona”) something you are–a personal soul or essence? Is it something you decide to do (a series of actions)? Is it a role forced on you by society and culture? All Bergman fans should have a copy of this film. It is at least as notable as *The Seventh Seal* and great more considerable than anything he did in the 70s and 80s. Many of his films are about the silence or non-existence of God; but *Persona* dares to prove us a world in which we are not even obvious that people truly exist.

The following points meant that I very nearly didn’t give this DVD a chance: -

1, The Magic Ring – Tom and Jerry’s last ‘feature length movie’ that turned out to be very disappointing.

2, The bad artwork on the hide of this DVD.

3, The dreary title.

4, The relieve conceal blurb that states that T&J ‘put aside their differences to work together’. It didn’t work in T&J The Movie and it only objective works here.

I’m gay that my loyalty to the characters made me catch this – its worth it.

Of the modern characters only Tom, Jerry and Spike appear. Their develop isn’t that of the classic shorts but is peaceful legal to them while being more simple and fluid. And they don’t (including strangely Spike) snarl! To imagine the standard of animation, writing and do – mediate a very wonderful episode of Animaniacs or Pinky and the Brain. The jokes and reactions are a shrimp on the Tex Avery side but this works alright and results in some very comic facial expressions particularly from Tom. The fighting gags are generally agreeable but some are very familiar particularly the opening sequence in the kitchen which is very similar to the opening of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (this may be on purpose as it seems to be directly referenced with the cookie jar on top of the fridge) . Once T&J derive out of the kitchen and rupture the rest of the house we are on a roll that lasts for a qualified 10 minutes of mindless violence before we inaugurate with the ‘plot’! The discover gags also raise some smiles including the obtain of the landing pod and the giant robot.

The residence is beautiful but any character or characters could have substituted for T&J – they are delicate incidental. Saying this, the state setting allows for some ample jokes – T&J in zero gravity!

The spot with some of the novel T&J output including ‘The Movie’ is that, since T&J themselves are not really good of carrying a whole feature themselves, the other characters have been blooming bland and dragged the whole thing down. This is different. Although the Martians are fine irritating they only appear in the last third of the film – the astronauts on the other hand are excellently written and performed making the film watchable when the stars are not on shroud.

There was one point of this film however that constantly annoyed me throughout – the music. Although quiet very well, using Carl Stalling’s trick of interpolating song tunes to comment on the action, it is all sythetic. No steady instruments – impartial abominable elevator muzak. Being old-fashioned to the classic shorts which were backed by a tall orchestra, this is a terrible demonstrate and takes the polish from an otherwise delightful film. This aside, on the strength of this I search for forward to the next T&J outing and hope that more classic Warner and Warner-owned characters can rep a unusual lease of life on hiss to retail DVD.

I had reservations considering some of the new Tom & Jerry “movie” releases (ie. “The Magic Ring”), but this capture turned out to be a winner. A titanic selling point for accurate fans of the cartoon series: Neither Tom nor Jerry Inform! Instead this movie sticks to the classic Saturday morning chasing and body-reshaping wound the two do so well, and relies on MUSIC to relay their emotions.

This movie also has enough of a storyline and overall set to maintain things rolling along nicely for 70+ minutes. Even if you didn’t grow up enjoying the antics of T&J, there’s plenty of tongue-in-cheek “adult humor” in this one to chuckle your diagram through a few watchings with your kids. For instance, the clever references to “2001-A Plot Odyssey”, the car battery jump-starting of the immense alien robot, and the hilarious “vacuuming” scene advance the demolish. The writing is titillating and smart, and the animation is crisp and character-driven (behold the dinky but well drawn facial expressions the various characters display – very silly stuff!)

Suffice it to say this DVD is a first-rate addition to the library of any moral fan of the T&J series. And their kids will luxuriate in it too!

Blind State was directed by this easy-going hard-working team of adolfo and amanda who patiently keep together the first peak oil film to seriously discuss “overshoot” and “carrying capacity” – two of the most vital concepts any world citizen should know. william catton’s monumental book overshoot finally makes it’s first appearance in a film as william catton, and later in the film, mathematics professor albert bartlett expose how ignoring population and simple exponential math will, unchecked, demolish western civilization and alarmingly soon. oil is a one-time resource. exhaust once and it’s gone. millions of years at the fair heat and pressure to get and it will be too expensive to extract by 2100 because no one wanted to do it for grandchildren or consume it sparingly. 2005 was probably the year of peak oil; that means that half of all the oil in history (the EASY to score half) is now gone. thus the raze of cheap energy. without fossil fuels the world could serve one billion, maybe 2.5 billion, depending on who you ask. so this century (of peak oil, peak uranium, peak coal, peak everything) the world’s population must go down quite a few billion whether we like it or not, or there WILL be a massive die-off this century.

when the first barrel of american oil was extracted in the 19th century, the EROI (energy returned on investment) was a whopping 100 to 1. civilization needs a ratio of 10 to one to survive. achieve a dollar in the ground and out comes 10 dollars of fossil fuel. the EROI ratio of oil is now at 20 to 1. there will always be oil in the ground. it will objective consume more money to pump it than it is worth. ethanol is a best 2.5 to 1. thus ethanol could only be a sprint on civilization due simply to a shamefully improper EROI (and you would have to plant only ethanol and have no food or people everywhere) . when the EROI of oil falls below 10, the threshold of civilization, and it will this century, then the actual fun begins. because few people are planning for this or thinking about anything other than britney spears and the michael jackson tributes few things will change in time. when your car is going to shatter and you are driving, the quick-witted thing to do is to reply. all of us must educate ourselves rapid -and acknowledge.

great interviews with richard heinberg, matt savinar, william catton, roscoe bartlett, albert bartlett, mary-anne hitt, bill mckibben, and even derrick jensen. nobody seems to want to hide derrick jensen and he’s such a colossal influence on the whole movement (check out his non-fiction books on civilization on amazon – incredible) . derrick says some huge stuff in this movie and it pleasing powerful begins and ends with derrick. some illiterate in england complained that this movie had no women interviewed. i understanding that’s beautiful insulting to mary anne hitt of appalachian voices who discusses mountaintop removal & coal. i also saw the reviews:

the title of the film comes from william catton’s wife who once paused and said to adolfo, “you know, i mediate it’s actually the world’s blind area” – people cannot eye the relationship between energy and population. we have temporarily extend the world’s carrying capacity for human population for two hundred years through the one time utilize of fossil fuels, when the fossil fuels go this century it will be the ruin of a lot of things. in my lifetime i will gape the destroy of the growth economy (you can’t have infinite growth on a finite planet), the return to community, local foods, local economy, less fade, and i’ll probably be using 90% less energy than presently (whether i like it or not) . i give this film the highest recommendation to anyone who wants to understand the crushing triple problem: climate change, raze of cheap energy, extinguish of cheap natural resources (water, copper, platinum, indium) . the jam isn’t global warming. the dilemma is global warming plus peak oil plus resource depletion. and even if americans do everything honest and corporations and the world helps, it may not matter, because the profligate exercise of energy (not to mention the environmental cost – blanketing irag in tons of depleted uranium that will continue to poison iraq’s citizens for 4.5 billion years- making d.u. affected u.s. soldiers demolish out their lives in diapers and on morphine) by the U.S. military assures that it (more than the rest of us) will compose the war on climate change unwinnable unless the war machine is stopped (since WWII we have known that economies pause alive by the stimulation of a raging war, so examine resistance repackaged again as patriotism) . spy AK presses tall novel book (green zone: the environmental costs of militarism by barry saunders) . The people at Sesame Street seem to withhold improving the quality of their Elmo shows. The songs and routines are imaginitive, and certainly sustain the attention of my two-year-old. He’s addicted to Elmo, so that’s the best indicator of success.

This edition focuses on things of wonder all around us, e.g., sky, moon, etc.

My 3 year broken-down objective loved the newest Elmo’s World. He brought to to school and his friends loved it too! Highly recommended!

This video lives up to Wiggle Time in entertainment value. My kids (5 and 3) characterize to each of the Wiggles as well as Captain Feathersword, Wags and Dorothy. We bought the video last weekend and since then the kids have memorized the dialogue and choreography. This is a terrific video choice for Christmas fun because your kids won’t unbiased sit and discover. They’ll gather up and dance and advise along. There are ancient songs plus some recent high energy ones. I unprejudiced asked my three year worn which song was his current and he said, “Let’s Clap Hands for Santa Claus,” a Wiggles novel. At the slay of the video there is a montage of Christmas songs excerpted from one of the Wiggles concerts. This is an added bonus to an already fantastic tape.

The Wiggles: Wiggly, Wiggly Christmas is another winner from a mountainous group. My 2 1/2 year ragged granddaughter loved it. It contains a mixture of extinct favorites and fresh Christmas songs. They include characters from the other videos, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain Feathersword, Wags the Dogs, and Henry the Octopus. Some children from snowy climates may wonder why they go on a picnic on the beach for Christmas, but it will be agreeable for southern climate children. (Remember Australia-home of the Wiggles has Christmas during their summer months) I’d choose it again!
